Electric bikes can provide more exercise on average than pedal bikes—an idea that may seem surprising at first. After all, how can riders who use a motor for assistance get more exercise than those powering their bikes entirely with their own energy? Yet, research published in Transdisciplinary Perspectives on Transportation Studies found that electric bike riders spend more hours per week exercising compared to pedal bike riders. They also travel greater distances, meaning people who switch from cars or public transportation to e-bikes often experience improved health.
Electric Bike Riders Usually Ride Longer
Studies have shown that people riding electric bikes generally spend more time cycling each week than those on regular bikes. How is this possible? The key lies in how e-bikes work. Equipped with an electric motor and battery, e-bikes make cycling less taxing, particularly during tough parts like uphill climbs or difficult starts.
Because riding an e-bike is less strenuous, people tend to cover more ground. Research found that e-bike riders not only spend more time cycling but also log significantly more miles than pedal bike users. Even with motor assistance, e-bike riders are still pedaling extensively, sometimes even more than they would on a regular bike.
For example, a 2018 study involving over 10,000 adults across 10 countries revealed that e-bike riders achieved higher weekly levels of physical activity (measured in metabolic equivalent task minutes) than pedal bikers. Simply put, they push themselves further because the ride feels easier.
E-Bike Users Report Longer Average Trips
E-bike users also report making longer daily trips compared to traditional bike riders. On average, e-bike riders travel approximately 8 kilometers per trip, while pedal bike users cover just 5.3 kilometers. This difference is significant and shows that e-bike riders are physically active for longer periods.
The added motor assistance encourages trips that would otherwise feel too challenging on a regular bike. Whether commuting to work or cycling for leisure, e-bike users are more likely to ride farther and longer—translating into more exercise overall.
E-Bikes Handle Rugged Terrain with Ease
Riding on rough terrain? E-bikes make it more manageable and, surprisingly, more active. Mountain bikers often tackle tougher climbs on e-bikes than they would on regular bikes. While many pedal bike riders might rely on a cable car to get to the top of a trail, e-bike riders frequently use their motors to power through the climbs.
Though the motor reduces some physical strain, riders still get substantial exercise—far more than if they opted for the cable car. Even on milder nature trails, e-bike users often pick steeper and more technical routes. With the motor helping out, these riders feel confident to take on greater challenges, leading to increased physical activity.
This ability to explore more rugged terrain makes e-bikes a fantastic tool for both adventure seekers and fitness enthusiasts.
Most Riders Have a Positive View of E-Bikes
Another interesting factor is the sheer enjoyment people get from riding e-bikes. Studies have consistently shown that e-bike users find them more fun than pedal bikes. When people enjoy an activity, they’re more likely to spend more time doing it. For pedal-assist e-bikes, this translates directly into more pedaling—and more exercise.
A 2021 study even highlighted how participants described e-bike commuting as both “easier” and “fun.” It’s no wonder riders tend to stay out longer and cover greater distances.
That said, e-bikes with throttles—which don’t require pedaling—offer fewer fitness benefits than pedal-assist models. However, even throttle-powered e-bikes encourage outdoor activity, which can still provide health perks.
Let's Have a Try!
The idea that e-bikes don’t provide exercise is outdated. Studies and rider experiences consistently show they not only help people stay active but often lead to more exercise than traditional bikes. Riders enjoy the ease, tackle longer trips, and explore new terrains—all while staying engaged in the activity.
Interested in giving it a try? E-bikes offer a fun and effective way to combine fitness with everyday travel. Whether you choose an e-bike or a regular bike, hopping on two wheels is always a great way to move your body and enjoy the ride!
